Upcoming Horror Movies in 2017

2017 is definitely the year for horror fans. From the beginning until now, we were fed with a variety of horror genres and subgenres that had surely satisfied everyone's personal cravings. From sci-fi horror of Alien: Covenant to the returns of some of the fans' favorite like Annabelle: Creation and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter or the cannibalistic feature of Raw, 2017 housed some of the best horror flicks.

However, I would say that these past few months were just hors d'oeuvrebefore Hollywood come in with delightful entrée of remakes and sequels although one would say they were just reheated leftovers of ideas.

1. Cult of Chucky (Oct 20 on DVD/Blu-ray)

I know, I know. Chucky may not seem frightening any more thanks to the witless Seed of Chucky- the image of Chucky masturbating still burns my mind! But come 2013's Curse of Chucky, a home video sequel to the murderous doll saga which holds a solid 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and won over the heart of its fans.

This time around, Chucky is back 4 years after the incident on the Curse of Chucky and now he will terrorize his previous victim, Nica who is now staying in an asylum after being wrongly accused of murdering her family. Also, watch out for the return of the iconic Tiffany doll!

Although this 7th installment will only be released on DVD and Blu-ray along with the release of Chucky: Complete 7-Movie Collection, here's to hoping that this long-living saga will do its justice with a theatrical release.

2. Happy Death Day (Oct 13)

The premise of Happy Death Day is generic but the first trailer looks promising enough. Backed by Blumhouse Production, the company behind Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Split and Sinister, to name a few, Happy Death Day could really be a hit.

The story revolves around Tree Gelbman, a college student who was murdered but wakes up in the morning to find herself reliving the exact same day over and over again. It sounds a lot like Before I Fall which was released earlier this year only with the slasher genre being thrown in.

With a mere budget of $5 million and the name Blumhouse stamped onto it, Happy Death Day could easily garner enough attention in the box-office to secure a sequel although it's also worth noting that there were some misses by Blumhouse Production suchlike The Gallows, The Lazarus Effect and Jessabelle.

3. Jigsaw (Oct 27)

Jigsaw is mostly known for two things- the movie that sparked the career of now renowned director, James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious, Furious 7) and the movie that revived the torture porn/ body horror genre back in 2004.

For this 8th installment, it takes place a decade after the death of Jigsaw where bodies start piling up which looks a lot like Jigsaw's sadistic style. However, co-director Peter Spierig stated that Jigsaw will be a less vicious R-rated flick, unlike its predecessors which could actually attract people with a weak stomach like me to finally watch a Saw movie.

4. Leatherface (Oct 20)

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise came a really long way from the 1974 movie which the original is dubbed by many as one of the horrifying movie ever made. The roaring sound of the chain saw and a maniac wearing a leather mask made of human skin? NOPE.

Sadly, now the "NOPE" effects wore off after seven movies and can we all agree that Texas Chainsaw 3D was a pile of shit with the only surprising element is that it made enough money to secure another movie. Don't get me wrong, I love this franchise but I feel like it's getting tiring and couldn't really live up for the brutality of its originals.

Leatherface will serve as an origin story for the main antagonist, focusing on how he turned into this insane dude running around killing people with a chain saw. Oh, and what motivated him to wear that freaking human-skin mask.

5. Flatliners (Sept. 29)

Another horror remake this year, Flatliners is based on the 1990 film of the same name which starred Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts. The original wasn't really scary but it was thought-provoking and in a league of its own.

Fast-forward to 2017, the new and polished Flatliners still involve around five medical students who are conducting an experiment with a machine that gives them near-death experiences.

Remakes didn't do well this year (Rings, The Mummy) and I am not sure if the same case will happen for Flatliners. Bringing Kiefer Sutherland and a solid cast ensemble is probably a smart move but we'll see.

6. Suspiria (TBA)

It's been 40 years since the release of Suspiria back in 1977. With the vibrant colors used and a superb soundtrack, Suspiria is still considered one of the goriest and scariest horror movie ever. Thus, it's no surprise for Hollywood to bring back this movie with an updated version.

The story centers around Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson), an American ballet dancer enrolling in a prestigious dance academy in Germany only to discover some gruesome deaths which are linked to a supernatural force.

This remake could actually succeed considering the well-known cast such as Tilda Swinton (The Chronicles of Narnia, Hail Caesar!), Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, How to Be Single) and Chloë Grace Moretz (If I Stay, Let Me In) and the fact that they are bringing Jessica Harper, the main lead from 1977's Suspiria could actually bring fans to the theaters.
